Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest - Forest
- A unique octagonal house built by Jefferson for his getaway spot. Jefferson referred to Lynchburg as the most interesting spot in the state. Archaeologists are still excavating the area around the home for more evidence of Jefferesonian occupation, and it is often possible to see them at work.

The James River Batteau Festival - Lynchburg
- Part sporting event, part re-enactment, this spectacle fills the banks of the James with participants and spectators every June. It takes six days to pole the flat-bottomed boats down the river to Maiden's Landing near Richmond, and the batteau crews in their early 18th-century costumes stop every night to enjoy a different riverside festival en route.
